Contact lenses are a great way to be free of glasses, particularly for activities when glasses can be a hindrance!
However as we strive to reduce the amount of plastic pollution in the world, we couldn't help but worry how contact lenses and their packaging would be adding to that. When TerraCycle® and ACUVUE® partnered to create a free recycling programme for any brand of soft contact lenses and blister packs, we were beyond excited!
Now you can collect your contact lenses and their packaging (separating the plastic from the foil), once you have collected a substantial amount you can drop it off to Chakshu London opticians, located near Camden Town, Regent's Park and Primrose Hill. Alternatively, you simply pack it up in a cardboard box and get a free UPS shipping label straight from the ACUVUE® website.
What happens to the waste?
Once collected, the aggregated contact lenses, blister packaging and outer foils are sorted, shredded and washed. The material is then densified into hard-granulated plastic granules. The granules are then extruded so they can be incorporated into the production of different plastic products such as benches.
